Jackie_new inspiration

I stumbled upon this amazing artwork by Nick Gentry. It really caught my attention, because he is using mixed paint and computer disks on wood as a medium. He is relating his art to technology, without actually using technology. I love the fact that it looks like a collage, but the piece as a whole looks like a portrait.

Inspiration for this week

I Found this website when searching ideas for my new portfolio. I loved the variety of layouts and design and I want to play around with a few of these ideas in my own portfolio. I decided to completely re-do my portfolio cause mine sucked looking back on it now!

web portfolios

Since we are working on updating our own web portfolios I wanted to look for other web portfolios online. I found this site that features a lot of well designed web portfolios.

Flash Portfolio

I found this portfolio that was done in flash and I loved the design. Everything is very clear but it still is creative and fun to go through.  My favorite part is the first page with the collage because its showing you images along with telling you what you will be clicking on.  The images turn to color when you roll over them to let you know your on a link which I also thought was nice.  The navigation bar at the bottom is also nice because it stays with every page so there is consistency.

Print design to Digital

I found this really nice article on the Computer Arts website. Its talks about 10 ways to transfer print skills to digital. I think something like this is good for every designer to know.

Inspiration

JK Rowling recently launched her new website.  While her old one was totally flash and very intriguing, this new version is a lot more simplistic and in a timeline fashion.  Seems like everyone is following in facebooks footsteps. But I like the soft colors and easy use.  The simple design is really appealing.

Weekly Inspiration

I saw a bunch of these on tumblr this week.  Its disney movie posters remade in a simplistic and sinister way.  I really loved how you understand the movie and see a darker side of it in such a simple way.

Amanda-New Memory

So I was having a hard time trying to figure out how to not make my wedding memory look cookie cutter-y so I decided to switch memories. In Graphic Design II we are working on a HOW Conference guide from Vegas and looking back through my pictures from when I went made me want to use that as my memory instead. I went to Vegas in August and it was amazing. It was my first trip out west and it is so much different than CNY. One of my best memories from my Vegas vacation was Fremont St. Its like one big party, there is a giant arching screen that spans I think 2 blocks and it features a music tribute something like every half hour. When I was there they played the Doors and Queen which are two of my favorite groups. There is a zip line just under the screen and Casinos on both sides of the street. You could hear the dinging and celebration from the Casinos and the music playing from a stage set up when the music tribute on the screen wasnt playing, they played 80's pop on the stage, I remember everyone around me having a blast. We went at night which was best because in August you can imagine what it was like outside during the day, but still it was 103 degrees at 8:30. Fremont St. is located in the older part of the strip which was cool because you got to see all of the old neon signs and lights, which were really cool.

I plan to use photos from my trip, which are some what blurry from trying to take pictures while walking but I think that it works. I would also like to use casino sounds and the Doors song "People are Strange"and possible Queens "We are the Champions"

Weekly Inspration

Every year these structures have been appealing and must be fairly easy to piece  together. In Mexico there is a whole community of shipping container homes. Considering there are roughly 17 million containers across the world, there is room to go around, for now. The architectural  layouts are getting really creative since when I waw my first design around the turn of the century. I would definitely consider working on a design pertaining to these homes.

My weekly Inspiration

Stumbling through the internet is awesome, I found so many cool sites but the one that really made me think about art and how it's presented is this site.
The site shows a bunch of cool street art that has big art, small art, art made from nature, and art made with other mediums.  One of my favorite pieces is the one to the left in which the artist simply drew 3 men riding camels and 3 camels following because it looked like a desert.  There's no point to this artwork, it's just an artist seeing and opportunity to make the world interesting and taking it.  This realization made me begin to think about my artwork and the reason that I take photos or draw something.  Is my work meant for something or can it just be?

Inspiration for the week

This web page displays 7 different mental disorders in the most minimalistic way possible. I thought this was really interesting and helpful in my thought process for our current project. I need to simplify the emotions from my memory so seeing these examples was interesting and shows that simplicity can still be effective in portraying a feeling/message.

Tim - My Memory

At first I wasn't really sure what memory I wanted to use for this project.  I have a lot of memories from my middle and high school years but I couldn't really think of anything from my childhood until I remember a vacation that my family and I took to Florida when I was really young.  This trip is the only time I've ever been to Florida so it's definitely important to me but what made it stick out was all of the feelings I began to remember as the memory became more clear.  The overall sense of my memory that I want to covey is that it was a time in my life when I really loved going to the beach, playing in the sand and going swimming in the water even though it was really cold and kind of dangerous.  I met this other kid that I was around my age and we jump into the smaller incoming waves because much further out the waves were huge.  I remember watching my dad and my brother out in the water and when the big waves came them and some other people would jump through the wave and come out safely on the other side.  Being somewhat curious and stupid, as most children are when they're young I decided to go out a little further into the ocean and when I tried to jump through one of the bigger waves I got pulled under the water and almost drowned.  On a more positive note I also remember playing board games with my parents, getting buried in the sand, and being really really happy.

Although I don't have may pictures from that vacation I want to use simple imagery such as pictures of the ocean, sand, beach toys, ect.. to convey the emotions and feelings of my memory.  I do have pictures that I've taken of other beaches or beach type environments which I could use along with creating imagery with any of the adobe programs.  Even if the images aren't from my memory I want the viewer to feel that they are and still be able to understand the overwhelming emotions that I felt when I was caught up in the wave, laughing with my parents, or splashing around in the water.

Tim 4 sites

The first site I found is called Mono* crafts and what I found interesting about the site was the way it use flash and the way the viewer has to interact to navigate throughout the site.  Usually with sites such as this one the interaction only goes as far as move the mouse around and clicking things for link.  In this site the viewer is made to interact with their mouse in such a way that the placement of the mouse on the screen will make the screen zoom in or make the links move fast or slow.  Another aspect that I liked was the way that the site use subtle ambient sounds that are slightly annoying but still attract the attention of the viewer.

The second site I found is an interactive video of the song "Neon Bible" by Arcade Fire.  What I found interesting about this site was different uses of flash throughout the video and the how the viewer could interact with the person singing the song.  One of my favorite interactions is about half way through the song you can click on his hand and rain starts to come out.  Eventually the screen fills up with water if you don't click his hand closed.  What amazed me was that the viewer can interact with the singer and things that happen on the screen and the song never messes up or changes.  The designer was able to allow chance interaction while still keeping the song and singer the same.

The third site I found is for a product called the "Turbo Chef."  This site was awesome, it drew my attention in so well that I ended up going through each recipe and watching the chef describe each cooking process.  By adding in a chef that gave descriptions of each cooking process as well as describing how well the product works and how well it works makes the site personable.  It almost seems like you have a personal professional chef teaching you how to make high quality foods.

The last site I found was a cool site that lets you create your own movie with images the viewer has taken of themselves or other pictures through Facebook. So not only are you making your own movie which is pretty awesome the designer of the site understands the power of social media in the present day and the cool stuff you can do with it.  What really made this site awesome was that after I went through some of the process I realized that this site is the perfect example of how to I could create my memory for Project #4.

Project 4

Memory:
The memory I am going to use is when I traveled to London when I was thirteen.  I chose this memory because it was my most memorable trip/vacation that I have ever taken, plus it was my farthest trip so it was my first time I flew on an airplane.  I went with five family members to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins.  They live outside of London so we would have to take the train to get into the city.  In London we visited the Windsor castle, St. George's chapel, the London Eye, went to the theater, and got a tour on a double decker bus.  Outside of London we went to a park where you can feed animals such as deer, and my sister and I went to school one day with my cousins.  They are our closest cousins so even though it was school we wanted to spend as much time together as possible.

I have some pictures of London I might be able to use but it was so long ago that the pictures might not be good enough to use, so most of my imagery might have to come from online.  For sound I was thinking that there should be background noise of traffic or a breeze because it was cold when I went.  I want there to be a cool and cloudy feel to the atmosphere because it was cloudy almost the whole time I was there.

Websites:
http://www.liliaplanet.com/
This site is someones portfolio and uses very limited text.  I liked it because with just the graphics and images you can pretty much navigate through her site without a problem.  The music works with the site too because it gives you a feeling of being in China or Japan.

http://www.liliaplanet.com/
This is also a portfolio, and even though it uses text it still uses graphics and sound.  The sound is very relaxing so it fits in with the graphics of people observing nature.  It is very consistent in the design that is used for the graphics so it keeps a steady pace just like the music.  It is interesting how you don't have to click on anything either, all you have to do is roll over the button and it takes you to the next spot.

http://www.rothaniko.hu/eng.html
This website is very interactive which I love.  The sound effects are great and go perfectly with the animations on the page.  The only text is on the bottom for navigation, but after you click on 'Paintings' for example you see a small thumbnail of each painting which you can click on to enlarge.  Overall I thought it was a great example of graphics, sounds, and animations.

http://www.margotblanche.com/index.html
I like the style of this website, it goes very well with the artists songs.  It's cool how she plays her own music on the first page, but I wish she kept the music going on other pages because the music really gives the website that oldie feel.

Gina's Idea for Project 4

Growing up I never really spent much time at a lake house or camp, because none of our friends really had one. But last summer I spent nearly everyday at Fair Haven Bay off of Lake Ontario at my boyfriends camp and had a blast. I made so many memories during the summer and I want to create an experience so that all the users can sense the amazing atmosphere of Fair Haven Bay.

In my journal I wrote of one time we spent on the boat and I want to incorporate this memory as an entire day of fun for my website.

Over the summer on a Sunday afternoon my boyfriend, his family and I decided to take the boat out on the lake and stop to go swimming. We traveled for what seemed like an hour enjoying the hot sun on our faces. It was the furthest I ever drove out on the lake. Finally his grandpa stopped the boat and we all got out to go swimming. On the way home it got a little chilly and the water was getting rough. As we made our way back to the bay the water started coming over the sides of the boat as the waves got bigger, and splashing all of us. We all started screaming and laughing at first, but then we got worried that the water would engulf the boat. After a while the bay was in sight and we finally made it back to the lack house all soaking wet.

^ I want to add on more about a night at camp, having a cookout and roasting marshmallows on a camp fire. By the end I hope to incorporate a full memory of an entire day out at the lake!

Examples of Interactive Sites- RESEARCH :)

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/3rtXEW/:1NWrmrlju:Ph3jHw7b/www.beonlineb.com/click_around.html/

1) This site incorporated a photograph of a man with a song playing throughout the experience. The black and white photograph on a black background made for an erie interaction. Also paired with a creepy song it made me wonder what was going to happen next. I was confused but interested at the same time.

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1d67IN/:PDPmiDD2:OGevPSrM/roxik.com/toy1.html/

2)This interaction was different than anything that I have seen. It showed the silhouette of two people and you controlled their fate. They were both hanging from a tree and you had to either help them to safety or shake them off the tree. In this case I guess you were creating a memory for these characters by playing around with the story.

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/4sh0fm/:1nkOMpjmH:OGevPSrM/www2.lost-in-val-sinestra.com/

3)This site would be a cool element to add to your site. It helps you create your own movie by using images that you have taken yourself. You choose your character and scene and you could probably recreate your memory using this site!

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/5bNMKn/:19rs.Tgbt:Ph3jHw7b/wwww.inbflat.net/

4) When I stumbled across this I thought it was very interesting. By using a group simple instrumental notes all together at the same time it makes for great sound! This idea can be used when we add sound to our sites as well!

Jordan - Memory Traces

For this project I want to re create my memory of a music festival that I went to last summer. The memory is of three days of 30,000 plus people coming together from places far and near in which all share at least one thing in common, the love of music. The reason that I choose this memory is because it was a happy and unique experience that I really enjoyed.

I plan on portraying my memory with images of the event from friends and also the internet. I plan to put together a site that gives of the aurora of being at a music festival and how I remember it. Along with music and other sounds like people talking and cheering being incorporated. Also since we are not using text I will use the artist symbols and such.

One thing that always reminds me of this experience is this video.

project 4 website inspirations

This website looks really cool.  It takes you step by step through the apollo 11 launch.  It reminds me of when I was younger we went to the Challenger Center in New Jersey and we got to play out the parts of Mission Control and the astronauts in space.
http://www.intel.com/museumofme/en_US/r/index.htm
I saw this website a few months ago and it was so awesome.  It taps into social media sites and creates a museum of your life.
http://www.mono-1.com/monoface/main.html
This website is pure silliness.  You can make Mr. Potato style faces for hours.  It's so simple yet entertaining.
http://www.marcecko.com/#/
For a commercial brand this is a pretty cool website.  I like how it moves round and looks like a gallery.

Project 4

For my memory I had a hard time thinking of one, but then I decided on one of the most exciting memories I can remember in recent years. The summer before my sophomore year I went to see Blink 182 in concert.  This was their reunion tour after breaking up a few years before.  While my two best friends and I were waiting in line to get into the arena, there were people giving out raffle tickets to win a chance to meet the band or get their seats upgraded to front row.  The three of us signed up twice since two people came around with the sign ups.  That means there were six tickets in our name.  The sold out concert had between 1500 and 2000 people there.  The first act goes on.  The second act goes on.  Suddenly my phone gets a call from an unknown number.  I answer it but its hard to hear since theres music playing loudly.  Then I hear them.  "You're name was picked and you get a chance to meet the band. Would you like to?" I start screaming and all the people around me just stared at me.  I sprint back over to my friends and tell them what happened. I can only bring one of them so we head over to the booth and get our wristbands.  I try to call every person I know to tell them whats about to happen but NO ONE answers.  Then someone leads us and about 8 other people through the arena to a VIP area in the back.  Standing there waiting, I can barely breathe.  These three men were such a huge part of my growing up and now I'm about to meet them.  My memory of the moment is so blurry, probably because I was hyperventilating.  I remember clearly when I asked Travis Barker for a hug he said "No....can I have a hug???" with such a genuine smile.  It was one of the best moment of my life.

I distinctly remember the smell of weed, hotdogs, and beer all around me.  It was a warm july day the sunset around us during the concert was beyond gorgeous.  Intense oranges and blues, but no clouds at all.  The buzz of people talking all around us and the three bands that performed, The Academy Is..., Weezer, and then Blink 182.  I'd like to use music from those bands, along with random background chatter from people and breathing heavily because I know I was near fainting at one point. I have some pictures from that day and other I could find sound specific pictures and possibly pictures that depict the song being played.

Vaz_Project4 Proposal

http://www.vitaminwater.com/#/1
These four websites are so awesome dealing with flash and making it look effortless. I really like Mauricio Studio's website with the flash.

My memory I'm doing is my unreal experience of touring China last summer. I'm going to go through a story for each city I went: Shanghai/Suzhou, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Xi'an. The over populated areas everywhere we traveled, the thick air you could barely breathe, the tastes of the food that we ate, the experience of standing on top of the Great Wall and overlooking the mountains and the rest of the wall, walking through the once sacred Forbidden City, climbing Pagodas, seeing the Temple of Heaven, the history of China at my fingertips. I chose this memory because this experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I got to go on. It changed the way I saw art, the way I live, being thankful for everything we have here (especially real toilets and not squatting over a hole in the ground!)
So I was on tumblr the other day and saw this video.  It literally blew my mind and I had to show you guys.  It's an update on Firefox that allows you to look at a 3D rendering of webpages.  You can see all the div tags too!! Seriously, just watch the video =]

Victoria's Project 4 Proposal

Proposal: After learning what this project was about and knowing we had to use a strong memory, the memory of my best friend passing away in a car accident was the only one that came to mind. I didn't even have room to think about another memory because that one is so strong. I want to use my website to display the wide range of emotions I felt between the time she got into the car accident till when she passed away. This isn't going to be a happy website because it's not a happy memory but I do hope to incorporate some comic relief in it because the girl that passed away was hilarious and I have nothing but funny memories with her. Everything with her accident happened so fast and was so shocking and I want to emphasize how quick it all happened using flashing images and quick motions. Everything is kind of a blur now and the feelings I was overwhelmed with made me numb so I'd like to incorporate those aspects into my website. I think I'd like to use a purple rose as my object that will unravel different parts of my story. Purple was her favorite color and the rose will represent her life and death. I hope to make each pedal reveal either a memory of me and her or a different part to her fight to survive the crash. When I first found out she was in an accident I was confused and skeptical as to how concerned I should be. When I got to the hospital she was so banged up that I didn't even think it was her. I hated going to the hospital, always have. The constant beeping and heavy breathing from the EKG's and respirator's and all of the machines puts me on edge and I want to put those sounds throughout my website. I also want to incorporate the nightmares I have of the crash and her scream. This part of my website will be dark and make the viewer somewhat uncomfortable to get a taste of how painful it is to think about. My friend fought for a full two days before she passed, I stayed in the hospital the whole time until I decided to go home and get some rest and go back in the morning. She was in a coma, I thought she'd wake up again if enough of us kept praying. I didn't sleep much that night but my eyes were tired from crying so much. I finally fell asleep and when I woke up it was over and my mom let me know she didn't make it through the night. This part of my memory is extremely blurry but I hope to make one of my pages being seen through my eyes (literally) and as my eyes slowly close I want the EKG noise to stop and the long beep representing dead heart to linger in the viewers ears. I also imagine the rose having no pedals left in the end but I am still contemplating this. I also may not want to leave the viewer feeling sad in the end because she's in a better place but I'm also indecisive about that so there is still a lot I need to make choices on.

Websites: This website is beautiful and powerful. The graphics within it are fantastic and so well put together. I found this flash site to be of the same aesthetic I wish to use in my sight. Beautiful but sad. I never want to stop listening to the music used on it either because it evokes my memory and my strong feelings of nostalgia. I found this website which I found relevant to this project not just because of the use of flash but in the use of sound. This kind of irritating sound is one that I want to use. The way they used the fast paced imagery also could be effective with my project because my memory is all kind of a big blur. The website also made me dizzy which ultimately gave me a headache. That could be a good way to describe the way I felt that day when I was overwhelmed with a million emotions at once. This website uses the same sounds of the heart beat with music that I would like to use in my website. Although this site is only a clock, it's layout is extremely unique and clean. It's making a comment on time which is also something I can think about while making my website. This last website is just plain silly but it is using flash in a humorous way. Whenever I start to get sad about my specific memory, I always think of something funny that my friend used to do to make me laugh and everything seems better again so this just gives me one more thing to think about.
Project 4 Proposal: One of my favorite memories was when I coached my son, Calvin's little league soccer team when he was 9 years old. One day in particular, stands out. Our team was called North End United, located in Burlington, VT. Sun was shining, the air temp was in the mid 60's, on that eventful Fall Saturday. I was the site coordinator for Parks & Recreation so he and I were always the first ones on the pitch, and the last to leave. The freshly cut grass steamed from the evening dew burning off. Every game and practice I would open the clubhouse door and all of my little helpers would help set up the cones, pvc goals, and nets. The skill level of the co-ed team was spread across the spectrum, so it was more important to make sure these kids new the importance of teamwork, hustle, and friendship, more than numerically winning, yet they always added up the goals. Cheering, claps, kicking the ball, heavy breathing, and referee whistles were the dominant sound. I will incorporate sounds with imagery to captivate the vivid memory.

Websites: When I think of my son, stars and the universe are always in the background. This site is creative and interactive and I hope everyone checks it out. I really like the faint moving background on this next site, it gives a feel of going down memory lane. The pop-up book layout display is nice and I would like to learn how this animation is made. Memories make a person go into their past and in this site, the mesmerizing portal will send you on your way.

Amanda - Project 4: Sites and Memory

I wasn't sure where to begin looking for Flash websites so I googled it and found a few sites that are really nice. The first one I found is really cool, its by Intel and called The Museum of Me. You can connect to facebook through the site and it uploads your facebook life into a museum gallery of you. This is the link to the Intel site. Another site I found was Dave Werners Portfolio, which is really nice. Another site is the Marc Ecko site which I like because the page moves as you move the mouse and its a clean layout which is always nice to see. The last site I found is the Waterlife website, its a really nice design and very interactive.

The memory that I would like to work with is from my wedding day. I was thinking of one of my most emotional moments and it was right before I walked down the aisle. This is what I wrote in my sketchbook: Standing with my bridesmaids, waiting for the music to start, trying not to get too emotional, breathing probably a little too heavily, so nervous and anxious and hating the thought of being the center of attention, I remember feeling like I was having an out of body experience. The music starts to signal the bridesmaids turn to go and my dad squeezes my free hand while my other hand clutches my bouquet. The girls head off, one by one, as I move closer and closer to the doorway. Then my music starts, signaling that it is my turn to walk down the aisle. I hear chairs screeching on the floor as people start to stand. I take my dads arm and then Im walking through the doorway. Time seems to move too slowly and too quickly all at once, I close my eyes and when I open them I see my future husband, waiting for me, smiling. I look down to keep myself from crying. I look back up and I am in front of the flowered archway, and I cant believe this is finally happening. I give my dad a hug and I take Chucks hand, the ceremony goes by so fast and before I know it, we've said our I do's and are pronounced husband and wife. I hear you may now kiss the bride, as camera flashes and clapping begins.

This is one of my greatest memories because it seems like it took forever to get to that point, my husband and I have been together for 8 years and were only married a year and a half ago. We've been through a lot of ups and downs, like any relationship, but I really looked an still do look forward to spending the rest of my life with him.

Project 4 Concept

http://duplos.org/ - This first website I found is very simple in its design with simple shapes moving and linking to different pages which is what I am interested in doing.
http://www.zasmakujelegancji.pl/ - This website is the website for Martini Asti. It is beautifully animated with flash with everything moving and interaction with the viewer of the website. What I thought would be a good example from this website is images moving into the picture and becoming stationary. Also there is a nice flow between pages and at least one thing on the page moves.
http://www.infinitcolours.com/ - This website is completely bizarre to me. It is interactive in the way that you can change the background image on the page and the navigation is just these moving strings that bring you to other pages. What I wanted to use from it is the background style, it is very vibrant and seems to move but doesn't, the picture looks very natural.

Proposal:
The memory I want to work with is one from last summer being in the Thousand Islands. The reason I chose the memory because of our dog Bailey, last summer was the last summer we got to spend with him before he was diagnosed with brain cancer and had to be put down. It was the first memory I thought of when the assignment was first given. The memory is of the day me, my boyfriend, his parents and Bailey (the dog) went out on the boat for the entire day cruising through the water ways of the Thousand Islands. Bailey, being the outrageous dog that he was, was at the front of the boat barking his life away yet cuddling up and licking my face every time the boat broke through the waves because he was scared. I want to recreate the images and sounds of that day. The mist of the water splashing me and Bailey, the sound of the boat engine, the sound of whirl pools we went through, Bailey's excitement and eagerness to jump in the water, the gorgeous sunny august weather and Bailey barking and crying and wagging his tail in excitement. I want to use imagery of Bailey, who was a golden retriever, of the boat and of the water. I want to include sounds of the boat and water and of a barking dog to communicate the feeling. The website itself, I want the pages to be in random order so the viewer can choose which page to go to when since the memory doesn't require me to keep it in sequence.

Jackie_4 websites

Here are 4 examples of interactive websites that I found.

http://www.buffalowildwings.com/

I've always thought the Buffalo Wild Wings site was cool. When you roll over anything on the home page you are able to interact with it, it's such a good idea.

http://www.2advanced.com/#/home

What mainly caught my eye with this website was the use of flash when the pages are loading. It's so interesting and it catches your attention right away. I also enjoy how the animals are interacting when you click on the different pages.

http://www.creaktif.com/

The main thing I liked on this website was that the image rollovers start of pixellated and then become clear when you hover over each link. It's a simple idea, but I like it.

http://theovenreinvented.com/

This website is awesome. When you first click on it, the oven is preheating while the page loads. Then you can pick recipes for them to show you, and you literally watch the chef cook. So cool!

Jackie_project 4

So for project 4, I am thinking about doing a memory from one of my vacations in Florida. I went to Florida during my freshman year of college with my best friend Elise, and my cousin Caity. We visited my grandparents, who live in one of those retirement neighborhoods, so we had to make our own fun. We went cruising around on my grandparents' golf cart every day of the trip, and we would bring along music with us. We had so much fun just being silly and laughing and singing and looking at all of the scenery. We were just care free and enjoying life, and it's one of my favorite memories. The song "Don't Stop Believing" was playing, so I want to try to incorporate that into my project. I am thinking I will have a picture of the inside of a golf cart, looking out at the view. I will either take a screen shot from the video we made, or if it doesn't turn out, I will hopefully be able to find one online. Then I want to show different scenery, and either try to make it move as if you are driving, or just change scenery on each page. To get to the next page you would just click on the steering wheel. Pretty simple concept, but considering the fact that it was a simple time, I think it could work out.

How Design Makes Us Happy

I really liked this article, because I do find that a good design makes me happy. I like when I see a well designed product because it does make me feel more optimistic. When I see a poorly designed product, being an artist, I like to think of how I could make it better. I think that most designers are like that.

Victoria's Influence of the week

So after talking with Martine about some business card designs she told me to do some more research on successful business cards. I found this website that I think has some really nice layouts and designs for their cards. All of the cards on this website have one thing in common and that is that they are extremely sleek and simple in their design. They play with text as well which is what I need to work on. I just thought this site had some good examples of simplistic but effective design that I could experiment with in future designs.

So for this weeks post I wasn't really sure what I wanted to post on and then as I was stumbling I found this site that gives 25 "mind blowing text effects."  One of my favorites that's a pretty simple design is the "Folded" type above because not only can this style of typography come in handy later with designs but also with animation/flash.  In general I thought that this site could come in handy for not only me but also to whoever's reading this and wants to learn how to make a work look like treasure or gigantic bubble letters.

I found this online portfolio of Gabriel Moreno who is an illustrator among other things. I really like her style and use of color and abstraction in her work.

This is literally insane!

I found this on my friends facebook page and I am not sure where he saw it but I am going to do more research!...

World's First Virtual Shopping Store opens in Korea. All the Shelves are infact LCD Screens. User Choose their desired items by touching the LCD screen and checkout at the counter in the end to have all their ordered stuff packed in Bags. Isnt that Amazing?

^This is so crazy to me. Technology is awesome but doesn't it make you wonder how lazy the world is going to get if more businesses begin to run this way. Job will be lost for sure!

Awesome typography

I found this website when I was stumbling. It's 25 different photoshop tutorials on awesome typography. I especially want to learn the first water effect one! I think the possibilities behind typography are endless and this just proves that. I really hope to test out some of these tutorials before the end of this semester.

Spoof Website

After thinking about things that bug me a lot, I quickly thought about all the materialistic people in this world that annoy the crap out of me. I then decided that I wanted to make a spoof website about Pandora bracelets. The amount of money people spend on those bracelets that I personally don't even think are pretty, is outrageous. It's all about the name brand, not the quality or even the appearance. With that, I am going to have a fun time making fun of the website and making a statement about the jewelry themselves. I look forward to comparing their bracelets to children's bracelets and I will post a few websites to show what I mean.
Googled "kids jewelry" and the images all somehow resemble pandora bracelets. In fact, pandora site was the first thing to pop up on the "web" section of google for this search. Because it's really necessary to get your child who grows every minute of the day a Pandora bracelet, don't worry about their college fund...that should just grow on a tree.

Spoof Website

It took me awhile to think of a concept because for some reason I don't think I'm very passionate about things. I know I have a lot of feelings about things, but nothing that makes me sit there and start debates with people usually.   But one thing really does bother me, and thats how over paid athletes are.  I was hoping to spoof one of the major sports association websites if I can figure out what to do since they all seem to work with javascript.

MLB
NFL
NBA

Parody Project

After much contemplation I feel I have always weighed in on the cigarette debate.   I have always paid full attention when The Truth commercials come on television.  Cigarette smoking has the greatest impact on kids.  Research brought me to the Patrick Reynolds. His ties in the tobacco industry run deep.  With anti-smoking campaigns always on heavy rotation, I want to spoof it up and play the big bad wolf.

Tim Wood - Foxconn

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2010/jun2010/foxc-j03.shtml

My concept is about the the manufacturing site Foxconn in Shenzhen, China and it's use of child labor and how poorly their workers are treated.  I also want to emphasize it's connection with Apple because recently an audit was done on Apple and the factories used to create their products and they found that a lot of policies and labor laws were being broken.  I want to change around their facilities section of their website that shows all of the places of the campus and bring to life what they're actually like.  I also want to add in a lot of pictures and information about Foxconn that aren't on the original site.

Photoshopped

My concept is about how excessive Photoshop is being used in the media.  I am going to use a variety of examples to get the point across. There are so many images available on the web that it won't be difficult to find what I need, and besides images I want to have a page that links out to videos about Photoshopped images.  I haven't quite figured out how I will separate the images into categories; but I will have a navigation to each category, the video page with links, and a page with 'The Message' that I am trying to make.  As a template I was thinking about using either a fashion, gossip, or a beauty product website such as these:
http://www.ralphlauren.com/home/index.jsp?ab=global_logo
http://intouchweekly.com/
http://www.lorealusa.com/_en/_us/index.aspx?FROM=WW-Dispatch-LOREAL-CORPORATE
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html
http://cellphoneaddiction.org/
http://www.forbes.com/2008/06/15/cellphone-addict-iphone-tech-wireless08-cx_wt0616addict.html
http://kplr11.com/2012/03/07/nomophobia-cell-phone-addiction-on-the-rise/

I want to address cell phone usage like texting and social networking. I am going to use verizon wireless as the base for my website. The parody is going to be based off that. I want to use humor as a vehicle for truth. I want to change the wording and some of the imagery, but leave some of the site the same.

Parody Site - Amanda

So I didnt want to go the serious route with this design and had just watched Dodgeball (for the billionth time) the other day and was thinking of doing a parody site on obscure/lesser known sports. My husband actually gave me the idea for this. I was thinking of going off of the Dodgeball spoof of ESPN 8 The Ocho.

Jordan - Research

For this project I plan on redoing a creditable news website into a parody of what the news actually is. My goal is to highlight the fact that many news stations are choosing stories to present as headline that are not the most important to cover up lager problem in our society. I plan on Keeping the same overall look and feel but change the captions and headlines to get my point across.

Vaz_Parody Website

http://www.whatsondalian.com/news-1411-french-child-model-thylane-lena-rose-blondeau-10-sexualized-in-vogue-enfants.html

My topic that I want to do the parody website of is toddlers and tiaras. Although I rather enjoy the show because it's entertaining to watch the parents get upset when their child doesn't want to do the pageants and would rather play with their barbies, HOW DARE THEY! I don't think that children that young should be wearing that much of makeup, fake breasts, fake teeth, fake eyelashes, and poofy (sometimes revealing) dresses. I thought that when you were a kid you're supposed to act like a kid and dress up in your Disney attire with barbies everywhere and not wear caked on makeup.

Project 3 Concept

http://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en/home.html

My concept is McDonald's and its meat processing system. Also what actually goes into their food, how healthy it is and what this food will do to a person. I want to change this website to show the truth about its food instead of showing pretty pictures of their food. Also change their slogans for things like happy meals and how great their food is.

Jackie_project 3

For my project, I want to focus on animal cruelty in the circus, especially with elephants. Circus acts such as The Ringling Brothers beat them, hit them and jab them with bullhooks. While on the road, the animals are chained up and tied down with ropes and kept in small uncomfortable cages. They also go through violent training sessions. Here are a few websites I am thinking about using. The Ringling Brothers website seems like it using almost all flash, so I don't think I'll be able to use it. I am going to try and use other circus websites and just replace all of the information. Also, the first website on the list is an organization led by the Ringling Brothers to show that they have an elephant center, where they take care of the elephants. I am not sure if this is entirely true, so I might use it as a spoof and put all of the negative information on the site about how cruel they actually are to the elephants.

Shoe Website Examples

For my concept I want to relay the message that people in 3rd world countries need shoes. I want to do this by spoofing an expensive shoe company's website.

Here are 3 sites that I have researched that relate to my topic:

TOMS

In Your Shoes

One Day Without Shoes

I found theses images while looking for more inspiration for my logo esign. These are logos designs with interesting letter form designs. There are more interesting designs here.

3.2 million dots

My friend had this posted on his facebook wall and I thought it was very cool. I like pointilism and when I first started learning drawing techniques this was one method that I was very drawn too.

New Internet Explorer Commercial

I saw this commercial on TV over break and really like it for some reason, maybe because of the music.

Cool Street Art Site

I found this website which is all street art created out in the environment. I think the natural vs. unnatural aspect of this is quite an interesting concept. I like how innovative some of the work is and I enjoy the giant wall spaces being used for large scale art. I think this colored pencil piece is so simple but so innovative at the same time. I love this idea of turning everyday objects into something else and I think we're going to do a little bit of this kind of thinking within the next project.

Jordan 2/28

I found out about this artist from abduzeedo his name is Sebastian Andaur, and he is a self taught digital artist from South America. I found his work very colorful and he uses a lot of contrast. I like this image above because of the striking colors and also because of the way he plays with perspective.

Design Inspiration - Amanda

I was looking around the web for web design inspiration and came across this site. The sites that this features are commercial but kinda cool at the same time.

Victoria Inspiration of the week

I did a little research the past week on imagery I can use as inspiration for my flash fiction Project. My story is based off the childs story of little red riding hood so I researched some images of her and I found this graphically pleasing image of her much like how she's portrayed in my flash fiction version of the story. I hope to incorporate some of this imagery into my piece successfully with her silhouette in part of it and the consistent use of the black, red and white colors. I want to keep it ominous and creepy much like this picture as well.

Landscapes out of Books

I thought this work by Guy Laramee was really cool because he takes books and turns them into landscapes and structures. He uses so much detail it looks amazing!
Here is a link to check out his website:

I love anything to do with typography, whether it's researching it or designing it. I found these while researching for our website project dealing with typography. I thought they were really interesting with the types of fonts chosen for each one that fits so well to the words being spelled.

COOL CLOCK :P

This really has nothing to do with the projects that we are working on but i just found it creative. One of the most unique clocks I have ever seen. I mean I guess it does has some sort of typographical design to it. See for yourself!

Matt Sheridan

I really enjoyed the lecture my Matt Sheridan last week.  He seemed like a really cool and down to earth guy for all the success he's had.  I was not expecting at all for him to have been an animator on Daria.  That was one of my favorite shows when I was younger.  It's also really funny that he directed Blues Clues for a while.  It clearly isn't the coolest thing to be doing,  but I can only imagine the money that could go alone with it. His art didn't fully make sense to me in the end.  The figure drawings out of water color, however, I thought were incredibly gorgeous.  His early work appealed more to me than his animated installation in the end.  I like the idea of deconstructing paintings and strokes, but the music and dialog connected with the pieces just didn't work in my head.  But I really think it was an inspiring talk and shows that people will have many jobs in this field and that doesn't mean they aren't successful.  It's just getting your name and artwork out there for more people to see.

Tim Wood-Matt Sheridan

Although I wasn't able to make it to the artist talk I went to the gallery and looked at his work for myself.  Overall I thought his three pieces of work were interesting with not only their subject matter but how they were presented.  If I stood close enough to the wall where his work was being presented my shadow would show up on the wall and it felt like I was interacting with the piece.  The one piece I really enjoyed was the "Chasing Tail" video.  Even though I didn't know what it's purpose was until after I saw the video I was attracted to it's constant motion and how it literally looked like something chasing it's tail.  After watching it for some time I almost became mesmerized with the consistent motions of the loop.

Sarah_Matt Sheridan Talk

I really enjoyed listening Matt Sheridan's lecture about his work and his journey to how he got to where he is now. What I got out of the lecture was very similar to the David Mazure lecture; keep all your sketches and old projects you thought were horrible or failures, because someone out there might think that it's the next great thing in art. Also I took out of it not to be afraid to take a chance with projects or anything that you do. I was really excited when he mentioned all the shows that he had worked a good chunk on like Daria, and Beavis and Butthead. Such well known shows that almost everyone watched after school on MTV, and here was the guy that did a good chunk of animation and layout on.

Matt Sheridan's Talk

It was really nice to see somebody's work who is successfully working in the field of animation and is not limiting himself to doing work only for somebody. His talk about his work and his accomplishments was very impressive he clearly loves what he does and that's impressive. It was inspiring to hear him talk about projects he worked on like blues clues but he didn't limit himself just to that he wasn't happy and moved on to projects that keep him interested. It was also inspiring to hear that somebody who has graduated from Cortland went on to do famous things yet still be an artist building on his own work and working not only for somebody but creating own work that gets great reviews and is shown all over the world.

photography+typography=awesome

Since our current project deals a lot with typography I thought I would post this site for the hell of it.  As someone interested in photography these photos are pretty amazing on their quality alone but what really pulled me in was the typography mixed with the photos.  Even if the text made the photo more funny, expressed an opinion, or was just there to further explain the photo each example was done right.  This site gave me a lot of good ideas and inspiration and I hope it does the same for whoever is reading this.

Sheridan Talk - Amanda

I enjoyed Matt Sheridan's talk and approach to his work. I like that he doesnt limit himself to one medium and is willing to take chances, because that is how I would like approach my work. He takes his ideas and runs with it, which is cool/refreshing. I like that he never lost confidence in his work even when turned down by various institutions, I dont think that I would have fared that well. I like how he takes simple ideas and makes it into interesting work, that to me is very inspiring.

Matt Sheridan's Talk

Matt Sheridan's talk was impressive. It's cool knowing that he came from Cortland and is now traveling across the world creating art and presenting his work wherever he goes. The way he talked about himself and his work was a lot like how I talk about and refer to my own work so it gives me hope for the future. I think it's interesting that he had experimented with different mediums to get to where he is today. I enjoyed how simple some of his animations were because it shows that a little simplistic idea can go a long way. He talked a lot about his numerous projects and jobs and it opened my eyes to how hard this field can get. He also spoke briefly on the fact that he was laughed at and ridiculed by many in his process because of his youth and lack of experience, which I found helpful because that would intimidate me an awful lot. To know that someone quite successful went through the same thing is comforting to hear. Even his presentation was pretty surprising, he kept my interest by using a lot of visuals and comic relief. I couldn't believe he worked for popular TV shows like Beavis and Butthead, Blues Clues and more. Definitely glad I went to this talk, very inspiring.

Matt Sheridan- Artist Talk

It was interesting to hear where an animation artist gets their motivation for their work. It was creative for him to take ideas from the current events happening while he was in school. A lot of what Matt Sheridan was saying I could not connect with. For example his ideas stemmed from serious disasters such as 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina. However his thoughts were immature and not as serious concepts. Since those events were prevalent in his life at the time his feelings were all impacted by what was happening around him.

It was funny to me how he talked about his work as well. Synthesis, one of his pieces, received different responses. People either loved it or they hated it. Personally I thought it was a successful piece incorporating color and texture. Since it was only 2 minutes long the elements he incorporated in it were successful.

The animation that really caught my attention was "Curse of the Paper Tigers". This was a recent piece he created in August 2011 while thinking of Iraq and the war that our country has been in for years. The simplicity of the shapes really brought me back to multi-media where we learned how to give attitude to an object. This was an awesome concept because even though the viewer doesn't know what the characters are, they still have tremendous emotions.

Jackie_artist talk

Matt Sheridan's artist talk was very informative and interesting. What I got out of it was that the biggest thing is to believe in yourself and to never give up. He has done so many different things since he has graduated. He has created pretty much every form of art, and has experimented with many different mediums. I think an important thing to remember is that you may not always be completely confident in something you do, and you may think that certain goals may be impossible to reach, but other people might be completely inspired by your work, and you could end up getting recognized for it. You just need to believe in yourself, and believe that someone in the world is going to be inspired by your work somehow. This is personally what I need to work on.

It is also interesting that he has had so many jobs already. When he got sick of one, he would always find another. I think this is inspiring, because I have been worried about what exactly I want to do. But it takes a while to figure that out, and it also takes trial and error. You don't have to be set to doing one job the rest of your life. It is better to quit, and find something that makes you happy, than to stay at the job that makes you miserable. Plus, I think the more experience you have, the more well rounded you can become as an artist.

Matt Sheridan at Dowd

Matt Sheridan's lecture at the Dowd Gallery was very interesting and impressive.  It was great to see that someone from the Finger Lakes New York can travel across the world, work on television series, and be a recognized artist.  He also made it clear that you don't have to stick to one type of art technique or work/job.  When he got tired or bored of one job he managed to find a way to a new work environment that was more appealing to him at the time.  Matt Sheridan also played with his own personal art techniques and methods to figure out what fit him.  Change is good in artwork, and consistent change brings out how that artist is feeling at that current time.  How people feel changes and their artwork shows it, and for Matt Sheridan he found that a change in jobs as well as personal artwork can take you where you want to be in life.

Something interesting that I took away from the lecture is that even though you may not find a certain piece of artwork you created amazing or perfect, doesn't mean that someone else won't be inspired by it.
I chose two images because each one has a different quality than the other, but are both qualities that I would like to use. This one creates an image with the words and letter while still giving a very powerful message. The other piece that I choose is the same in that Tim picked, and I liked it for the same reason. The text is used in a way that it is activated and comes to life. Using the text in this way makes the reader more interested and involved in the piece.

Tim Wood - narrative typography

"Pocket Watch"

I wanted to use these two as examples because I really enjoyed how the words and type were changed to fit the words and/or the theme of the overall narrative.  I chose "Pocket Watch" as one of my posts because the designer uses the type in a way that allows the viewer to understand the poem while keeping them active.  The type causing the viewer to move around the screen and pay attention because some parts of the narrative are quick.

I chose this posters as my second choice because I like how each word is different.  Whether the difference is with the size of the text or the font type by choosing to make the poster this way it keeps the viewer interested.  If this poster had the same words but were the same size, font type, and were positioned the same way the poster wouldn't be as effective.

Here there are many concepts from many different artistic angles. Posts are coming up regularly, so are new sketches, and finished pieces from the artists.

This SDC seemed to fit with this program, it gives students paths to consider. The site is easy to navigate and they layout set for success, it is rich in color and detail.

Narrative Typography Reasearch

In my research I found a few things that caught my eye.  These pictures really caught my eye and said something more than just the words they possessed. These are from here and here.

http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/7WwfFa/www.nawlz.com/

Both of these websites incorporate color and movement for an interactive feel. By viewing these two websites it reminded me of some of the first digital art animation. When computers first were popular a lot of artists created work to show the viewer what they could do on a computer. Therefore when seeing works such as these two I feel artists still take that mind set into consideration today.

Project 2 Research

2 Examples of narrative typography:

I found this piece of narrative typography which I think is great example of the project we're about to partake in. The way the text is laid out reflects the movements in the story, which is what i'd ideally like mine to do as well.

I also found this narrative typography in which the text portrays the feeling of a cold winter day. I enjoy it's simplistic font with the intricate detailed within some of the letters.

2 Non-Commercial Websites:

This website is a portfolio I found that incorporates his work into the website itself, which better showcases his work. His personal aesthetic is clear and consistent throughout the entire site which is nice.

Here is another portfolio site that I thought had a unique layout and setup. I liked that the image was interactive and the buttons were a part of an image she created.

Jordan - 2/14

Anna - Non Commercial website examples

This is an example of a digital portfolio that caught my eye because of its simplicity.
This website is also an example of a digital portfolio but I liked how it was set up and how every project shown told a story.
